According to Microsoft, 40 million licenses for Windows 8 have been sold since the release in October.  This means that between consumers AND manufacturers, 40 million copies have been sold but not all of those have hit homes/businesses yet.

Depending on who you ask, different analysts are saying different things about the Windows 8 release.  But, all we know for sure is that it is doing at least as well as Windows 7 so far which sold 60 million in the first two months  (This is likely due to Windows 8 being much cheaper.)
