The 8th-annual National Day of Civic Hacking will take place Saturday, September 12, 2020. More details will be posted here as the date approaches.
On September 21st 2019, Code for America Brigades hosted the 7th-annual National Day of Civic Hacking. Organizers hosted 46 events across the country, with over 1000 people showing up to make their local governments work better. This year’s events focused on the criminal justice system and the record clearance process.
In partnership with National Expungement Week, Brigades teamed up with in-person expungement clinics and other criminal justice experts to join the national movement of advocates, lawyers, and those directly impacted by the criminal justice system to help to remove barriers and create pathways to opportunity.

For this year’s National Day, the Brigade Network came together in collective action to focusing our efforts on helping some of the 77 million people in the United States impacted directly by the criminal justice system.
National Day coincided with National Expungement Week, an effort led by community-based organizations across the country to help people begin the process of clearing their criminal records. Code for America Brigades worked with partners who are already doing this important work and lifted up their voices in our communities, while being part of an effort to transform the record clearance landscape by expanding, streamlining, and automating the process.
At its roots, National Day of Civic Hacking is about making our communities better. We honed in on record clearance this year, but events organized around other topics were also welcome under our umbrella!
