Southern Illinois University is lucky enough to be at the crossroads of not one, but two total solar eclipses just a few years apart. On Aug. 21, 2017, we were at totality for 2 minutes and 38 seconds. On April 8, 2024, we will observe more than 4 minutes of totality during our second solar eclipse in just 7 years. For those who experienced the eclipse in 2017, 2024 can’t arrive soon enough.

We’re taking a break from eclipse event planning for now, but be assured that Carbondale and the SIU campus will yet again be a prime destination for amateurs and experts alike in 2024.

Meanwhile, feel free to browse our gallery of photos from 2017.
